Real-world testing plan
The document in which you set out in advance how you will test an AI system outside the lab: objective, methodology, scope, who takes part, for how long and how you monitor it. Without this plan, testing in real-world conditions is not permitted.

What this object links to
Every relation appears below as a path: from the source with its locator, through the conditions and exceptions of the object carrying the relation, to the consequence. A locator belongs to a statement in the data and not to a relation, so the source is the source anchor of the carrying object.

What this object states
Official fact
Attributable to a named primary source, with a locator. Where they differ, the official source prevails.
Article 3(53) defines a real-world testing plan as a document that describes the objectives, methodology, geographical, population and temporal scope, monitoring, organisation and conduct of testing in real-world conditions.

Our interpretation
Our own reading. It can change without the law changing, and it is not the position of a supervisory authority.
In practice this goes wrong because organisations keep calling a pilot with real users a pilot and assume nothing applies. As soon as you trial an AI system with real people in a real environment, you fall under the regime of Article 57 or 60, and that requires a plan drawn up in advance that can be reviewed. A test plan written after the fact to fill a file does not meet the definition, because the essence of the concept is that the design is fixed beforehand.

Recommended step
A practical step we consider appropriate. Not an obligation following from the Regulation.
For every real-world test, record a single document containing the eight elements from the definition: objective, methodology, geographical scope, the population involved, duration, monitoring, organisation and conduct. Link that document to the registration of the test and retain it with the date of approval.
